Does the Ebay Feedback System really work?
January 11th, 2009
there literally hundreds od counterfeiter and bootleggers on ebay who sell there junk disguised as name brand and yet all of them have 98% or better feedback and have no less than 1000 feedbacks total. So far hear is a list of bootleg/counterfeit items I've recieved from sellers who have 98% positive feedback or better with no less than 500 feedbacks total
Gucci dog tag - counterfeit!
Timberland long sleeve shirt! -counterfeit!
mach3turbo razors -counterfeit!
sandisk sd card -counterfeit!
lil wayne remix music cd -counterfeit!
Band of Brothers HBO mini series dvd collection-counterfeit!
All from ebay sellers with excellent feedback!
I don't mind the the counterfeit thing so much as I do the "not working part" The fake Gucci dog tag began fading after only 2 days ,the timberland long sleeve shirt literally fell apart after running it through the washing machine. The counterfeit razors cut face , the sd card didn't fit and sometimes would save my pictures in my camera. And the music cd I payed 22 dollars for which is only 2-3 dollars less than the real cds at the store was a cdr with mp3 music on it and they where all burned with an extremely low bit rate so the music sounded like it was coming from a high powered transistor radio from a crappy mono stereo with bad reception. The band of Brothers dvd worked great to if you don't mind the the big Chinese sub captions blocking almost an 1/8th of the screen!
Apparently counterfeiters are aware that it is possible to have multiple accounts on ebay and simply set up auctions and bid on them with other screenames and post false positive feedbacks. I've verified by recently opening a second ebay username and paypal account. Why wont ebay just stop allowing people to have more than on username?
And all of these sellers had excellent feedback and all from Asia.
I've never had a problem with it.

I don't buy anything from ebay that comes from Asia. I think a lot of people buy and give feedback asap before they even realize the things are counterfeit.
What drove me crazy was when I sold a DVD still in the wrapper on ebay and the guy gave me negative feedback because he "wasn't sure it was real." It was absolutely real. I bought it and never opened the package (it was an 80's movie on sale for super cheap) and then about a year later the price was like $80 on ebay since it was out of production. Ugh.

Ebay is supposed to be checking for duplicate accounts, but obviously they aren't doing their job. I don't think you'll ever stop counterfeiters from selling stuff. Ebay has no way to guarantee authenticity. They probably wouldn't do something about it till they get enough complaints. Then the person probably just moves on like you say. The feedback system is their only mechanism to evaluate whether to buy something. It is a crying shame this stuff is going on. One thing I do is always use Paypal. And then I fund it with my American Express card. If somebody send me a fake, I can dispute it with American Express and I have never lost a dispute in 15 years.

Ebay has alot of support, and spends alot of money doing the best they can, with the millions of users, it would be hard to be perfect at it. I see those sellers too, so I read the neg comments and judge by that. Many neg feedbacks are from lousy or impatient customers. Like you said, the bad product description tell me who to stay away from. Did you see the big deal about the seller Eforcecity? Highest sales of anyone on Ebay? They sell cheap replacement parts amoung other things. So I guess its the padders that help inflate Ebays overall business. Just as you were able to do so, Id be so easy to simply have a few friends buying fake auctions to push the negatives far down the pages. Overall I like Ebay.

Unfortunately, unless you report the user for opening multiple accounts and posting false positive feedback with a lot of proof to convince e-bay that you know the two accounts are made by the same person, there is no real way to know if the item is counterfeit/bootleg or not.
Not to bash anyone (or great prices) but usually the best guarantee to get a good item is to get it from your own country and to buy it at the lower end of the median price range. (Like the median price being $15 for a CD and someone selling it for 99 cents, avoid the 99 cent one.)
Check out the User Agreement (esp under the "Using eBay" section) to see what I'm talking about.
Hope it helps
