If you download music for free, it's automatically against the law. So you're going to have to pay anyway.
Besides, anything free besides LimeWire, such will have viruses on it. Even LimeWire might have viruses.

There is almost no way to download free music without it being illegal. Some sites you can make an account and pay a few cents for a song. But If you really just want free music emp3world.com has been good to me as well as using altavistas audio search. You could also use torrents and download entire albums.

That’s the rub: you can’t download music for free, as it *is* against the law.
You can use playlist.com or pandora.com to listen to the music online, whenever you go online. As for where to download it, http://www.mp3-network.net/

Spiralfrog.com. It is the only good LEGAL music site on the web! trust me, i’ve looked.
It is easy to use. just sign up, search, click and download! No spam, no scam, no viruses; just an ad supported site, but don’t worry! They do not get in the way at all! They are just banner and side screen ads!
I’ve already downloaded over 700 songs for free and legally!
It is DRM protected so you need to use a converter to get the songs to your iPod or Zune. Here’s the best one:

You might have to play around with it for a while to get how it works, but it does work!
It is the only free converter I know.
Spiralfrog has 4 out of the 5 major labels. For all other bands, I suggest the method below.
If you want pretty much every artist on the market and you have some time, here’s a really good trick
1. Download Rhapsody’s 14 day trial. You have to give them your credit card, but don’t worry! They won’t charge you for fourteen days.
2. After you add their songs to your library, right-click and download all the songs you want. (I really mean ALL THE SONGS YOU WANT and from all label artists)
3. Convert all the songs with the software above.
4. After you’re done, call them and cancel the subscription. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, OTHERWISE THEY WILL CHARGE YOU!!
5. Enjoy the music and give me best answer!
P.S. This also should work with Napster and other programs of that type although I have not yet tried it.

Recently I just found the best website ever http://www.musicoin.com . I can either listen to music only or download music for free. It is featured the latest music only, like Britney Spears Circus, Pink, Beyonce, Metallica, etc. Oh you have to register first in order to download the music. And it is free too. So go for it.
